“Home is the first school and parents are the first teachers.” Recognizing the
truth of this maxim, Literacy Volunteers Winchester Area, Handley Library, and
Winchester Public Schools are teaming to provide a Multilingual Family Reading Night to celebrate the importance of family literacy.
The event on April 5, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. will begin with tours of the library and the
opportunity to obtain free library cards. Then, Stormy Thrasher of Literacy Volunteers
will explain the services that this organization offers to adults in the community. Kim
Peterson, ESOL Program Coordinator for Winchester Public Schools, will discuss what
parents can do for children to promote good reading habits.
Students from John Handley High School will model their love of reading and
languages by sharing children’s books in English, Spanish, and Arabic. This family
